Charge Your 48V System While You Drive

Convert 12V alternator power into controlled charging for a 48V house battery.

Solar production is not always enough to keep a 48V battery bank charged during travel, winter weather, or extended off-grid use. The Orion-Tr Smart converts energy from a 12V starter system into a programmable 48V charging profile so your RV, boat, van, or expedition vehicle can recharge its high-voltage service bank whenever the engine is running.

Controlled DC-DC charging is especially valuable with LiFePO4 batteries because their low internal resistance can demand more current than a conventional alternator can safely provide when connected directly. The Orion creates a defined charging path instead of allowing the house battery to pull uncontrolled alternator current.

12V to 48V Step-Up Conversion

The charger accepts an 8–17V input and provides a programmable 40–60V output. Configure the charge profile to the exact absorption and float values published by your 48V battery manufacturer before connecting the service bank.

Protects Your Alternator from Overload

The 8A output is measured on the 48V side and represents approximately 380W-class charging. Controlled output helps prevent a low-impedance lithium bank from pulling uncontrolled current directly from the vehicle alternator.

Smart Engine-On Detection

Configurable engine shutdown detection can enable charging when alternator-running conditions are detected and stop charging after engine-off conditions occur. A remote or ignition-controlled input remains available for installations that need explicit control.

Built for Marine, RV and Off-Grid Systems

Galvanic isolation, programmable charging, and scalable output.

Fully Isolated DC Sides

The 200VDC galvanic isolation separates input, output, and case. This can help avoid unwanted ground-loop paths in mixed-voltage and marine systems, while proper bonding, grounding, fusing, and installation standards still remain essential.

Expandable Parallel Charging

Multiple Orion-Tr Smart chargers may be connected in parallel for greater output. The alternator, starter wiring, external fuses, ventilation, and battery charge acceptance must be sized for the combined input and output power.

Complete Control via Bluetooth

VictronConnect App Integration

Use VictronConnect to select charger or power-supply mode, choose or create a battery preset, adjust absorption and float voltage, set input lockout and engine-detection thresholds, review operating state and warnings, and control the charger remotely.

This Orion-Tr Smart isolated model does not report input or output current in VictronConnect. Add a compatible shunt or battery monitor when precise current, energy, and state-of-charge tracking is required.

Compatible applications

12V alternator charging for compatible 48V house and service batteries.

  • Charging a native 48V LiFePO4 house battery from a 12V vehicle alternator or starter battery.
  • RV, camper van, overland, skoolie, and expedition vehicle systems using a 48V auxiliary bank.
  • Marine installations where the 12V starting system and 48V house or propulsion-support system require galvanic separation.
  • 48V trolling motor or auxiliary battery charging while the main engine is running, subject to equipment requirements.
  • Off-grid mobile systems that need alternator charging when solar production is limited.
  • Smart-alternator vehicles requiring controlled DC-DC charging instead of a direct battery connection.
  • Installations requiring a programmable 48V charging profile for compatible lead-acid or lithium batteries.
  • Higher-power installations using multiple matched Orion-Tr Smart units in parallel when the alternator, wiring, fusing, and thermal design support the total load.

Critical installation safeguards

  • Verify input and output polarity before making any battery connection; the charger is not protected against reverse polarity.
  • Install external fuses and cable sizes according to Victron’s current manual and the actual cable lengths in your system.
  • Program the correct battery charge profile in VictronConnect before connecting the 48V service battery.
  • Confirm that the alternator and starter-side wiring can continuously supply the required input power without overheating.
  • Do not cover the charger; provide ventilation and keep heat-sensitive materials away from the enclosure.
Frequently asked questions

Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/48-8A FAQs

Common questions about 12V-to-48V conversion, alternator protection, isolation, Bluetooth, and installation.

What does "12/48" mean on this charger?

It identifies the voltage conversion: the Orion accepts power from a 12V-class starter battery or alternator system and steps it up to charge a compatible 48V-class service battery. The published input range is 8–17V, and the output is adjustable from 40–60V.

Is 8 amps enough to charge a 48V battery?

The 8A rating is measured on the 48V output side, so it represents roughly 380W of charging power rather than the much lower power associated with 8A at 12V. Input current on the 12V side is substantially higher and varies with input voltage, efficiency, output setting, and battery state, so cable and alternator sizing must be based on the full installation—not only the 8A output number.

Can I use this to charge a 48V Epoch LiFePO4 battery?

Yes, provided the battery is compatible with the charger's 40–60V adjustable output and the Orion is programmed to the exact absorption, float, and other charging values published for that battery model. Select an appropriate lithium preset or create a custom profile in VictronConnect before connecting the service battery.

What is the difference between an isolated and non-isolated DC-DC charger?

This isolated model keeps the input negative, output negative, and case galvanically separated, with 200VDC isolation. That can help prevent unwanted ground-loop paths and is useful in marine or mixed-voltage systems. Isolation does not replace proper bonding, grounding, overcurrent protection, or professional system design.

Do I need to run an ignition wire?

Not necessarily. The Orion-Tr Smart includes configurable engine shutdown detection that can enable charging when engine-running conditions are detected and stop charging when the engine is off. A remote on/off or ignition-controlled input can still be used when the installation requires forced or more deterministic control.

Can I connect multiple Orion-Tr Smart chargers in parallel?

Yes. Victron permits multiple units to be connected in parallel to increase output. The practical number is limited by alternator capability, input current, cable and fuse sizing, ventilation, battery charge acceptance, and the installation's electrical design.

Does VictronConnect show charging current?

VictronConnect is used to configure and monitor operating state, voltages, settings, warnings, and shutdown reasons. Victron notes that this Orion-Tr Smart isolated model does not display input or output current in the app, so a separate battery monitor or shunt is needed when precise current and energy tracking is required.

Is this charger waterproof?

No. The electronic section is rated IP43 and the connection area is IP22 when the unit is installed with the screw terminals facing downward. Victron's manual states that it must not be operated in a wet environment. Install it in a dry, well-ventilated compartment with adequate clearance for heat dissipation.

Does the charger protect against reverse polarity?

No. Victron specifically states that this product is not protected against reverse battery polarity, and reverse-polarity damage is not repairable or covered by warranty. Verify polarity before every connection and install the required external fuses and properly sized conductors.

Can the Orion-Tr Smart be used as a power supply?

Yes. In addition to charger mode, the unit can operate in fixed-output power-supply mode with an adjustable output voltage. Configure the operating mode and voltage in VictronConnect before connecting the load or battery.
